Why not Pair your EV with a PV System?

Why not Pair your EV with a PV System?

You’ve pulled the trigger on that electric vehicle (EV) that caught your eye, and more so your wallet, and now you’re living the fuel-free life. The excitement of not being beholden to the monthly fluctuations in fuel prices makes you think, well what could I do next? The next obvious step is to pair your EV with a photovoltaic (PV) system.

Installing a PV system at your home or office is simply sound economics – cut your electricity bill immediately once your system starts to generate electricity to be fed back to the national grid. And there are tax incentives for installing solar systems at your home. However, the better part is that if you are charging your vehicle where you have solar panels generating current, then you’re going to reach a stage where it is not costing you anything to power your car.

To efficiently charge your vehicle from solar panels, you will not find a direct method, but you can couple your home/office EV charging unit with a PV inverter that converts the solar energy into DC current for your electric vehicle. However, given that most charging at home happens overnight, when there’s no sun, you may also need to consider a battery storage solution.

Installing an optimum number of solar panels to simply charge your vehicle is not an efficient use of capital. The good news is that your PV system is always feeding back into the grid, so you’re constantly earning while the sun shines. Apart from the economics of it all, there is also the reduction in your carbon footprint in operating your building and your vehicle when you go solar. The undeniable benefit to our environment is an investment that will last for generations to come.

Directions

Travelling on the ABC highway from JTC Ramsay (Bussa) Roundabout/Haggatt Hall heading south, take the first left just after you pass the pedestrian overpass outside CBC TV. Take the second left and we're the last building on the right at the end of the avenue.

If you’re coming up the highway from the south, you will need to go to Bussa Roundabout and reverse your direction of travel, as entry to the avenue is only available on the southbound lanes.
