Deck the Halls Safely: Electrical Safety Tips for Holiday Decorating

The holiday season combining Independence and Christmas in Barbados, is a time for joy, cheer, and festive decorations. However, it's important to remember that improper electrical usage can lead to serious accidents. To ensure a safe and happy holiday season, follow these electrical safety tips:

Before You Decorate:

  1. Inspect Your Lights:
    • Check for Damage: Look for frayed wires, broken bulbs, or water damage.
    • Test Your Lights: Plug them in before hanging them to ensure they work properly.
  2. Use the Right Bulbs:
    • Match the Wattage: Make sure the wattage of the bulbs you use matches the rating of the light strand. This is especially important if you’re making up strands for outdoor lighting.
    • Avoid Overloading Outlets: Don't plug too many lights into one outlet. Use power strips designed for holiday lights. Again, this is very important when you plan elaborate outdoor/house lighting displays.
  3. Outdoor Lighting:
    • Weatherproof Lights: Choose outdoor-rated lights to withstand rain, direct sunlight, and hot temperatures.
    • GFCI Outlets: Ensure outdoor outlets are GFCI-protected to reduce the risk of electric shock.

While Decorating:

  1. Ladder Safety:
    • Stable Base: Place your ladder on a firm, level surface.
    • Reach Safely: Don't overreach. Use a longer ladder or get help if needed.
  2. Indoor Decorations:
    • Keep Lights Away from Flammable Materials: Avoid placing lights near curtains, trees, or other flammable items.
    • Securely Fasten Decorations: Use insulated hooks or clips to hang decorations.
    • Tinsel Can be Conductive: Remember that our beloved tinsel can be made of flammable and conductive materials and special care should be taken in its use.
  3. Outdoor Decorations:
    • Low-Voltage Lighting: Consider using low-voltage lighting, as it's safer than traditional high-voltage lights.
    • Extension Cord Safety: Use outdoor-rated extension cords and avoid running them through doorways or windows.
    • Compressor Temperatures and Ventilation: For inflatables, ensure that you set up the compressors in a safe, dry well-ventilated area to allow for adequate cooling. Also, check the duty-cycle on the motor to ensure you do not leave them plugged in for longer than the rating suggests.

After Decorating:

  1. Regular Checks:
    • Monitor Your Lights: Keep an eye on your lights for any signs of wear or damage.
    • Turn Off Lights: When you leave home or go to bed, turn off all lights and decorations! Unattended lighting displays and inflatables can create a hazard which can ruin your holidays.
    • Check Your Real Tree for Browning: A brown/dry Christmas tree can create its own hazards. Make sure your tree is kept watered in the base and remains relatively green while still lit. We know we love a real tree in Barbados!
  2. Proper Storage:
    • Coil Cord Gently: Wrap cords loosely to avoid damage. Use twist-ties, masking tape, or cable organisers/wraps to manage your strands
    • Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Keep decorations away from moisture and extreme temperatures.

By following these simple safety tips, you can enjoy a beautiful and safe holiday season. If you’re planning an elaborate whole house lighting display or large outside decorations and lit or inflatable displays, it is best to consult with an electrician or electrical contractor to ensure it’s all done safely. Remember, a little precaution can go a long way in preventing accidents.
